Initially, ration cards were issued to all households in India so the food grains and fuel were issued against it at subsidized price. It also served as proof of address and identity before other documents like PAN cards and passport. Ration cards are still used these days so deserving residents can get free or cheap ration with it. They also use it as proof of address when it comes to apply for PAN card and other government services.

But there have also been the risk of fraud where a person gets more than their share of basic needs or where they are not even eligible for ration. So, it keeps more deserving people away from it. To deal with these instances, government has made it compulsory to link ration cards with Aadhar card of an individual. Aadhaar is a unique identification number which has all the biometric information of an individual. When Aadhaar has been linked to PAN card, the financial transactions of individuals are also linked.

Benefits of Linking Aadhaar to Ration Card

The main benefit for the government to link Aadhaar card to ration card is to stop the cases where people obtain several ration cards. This way, the government will be able to control the activities that keep the poor refrained from getting ration. It will stop people who are not eligible for ration as their income is more than the threshold of ration from claiming it. It will ensure the subsidized food items and fuel only for the deserving people. Aadhaar can be linked to your Ration card either online or offline.

To link Aadhaar to ration card offline, take photocopies of Aadhaar of all family members and ration card photocopy. Also take a photocopy of bank passbook if it is not linked to your bank account.

Take a passport sized photograph of head of your family and furnish the documents to ration office. You will be notified by email or SMS once the documents reach the department. Your documents will be processed and you will get a notification once the ration card is linked to Aadhaar successfully.
